Review

Down Beat (p.82) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[A] minor gold mine of integrity and intrigue. There's a complete absence of posturing, just a man communing with the keys and almost involuntarily refracting one of the most versatile careers in jazz."
JazzTimes (p.88) - "[With] vast quantities of fascinating individual ideas, some the partial skeletons of known or unknown songs. More fascinating is how these myriad ideas are impulsively juxtaposed."

Title Note

Paul Bley is one of the great free-jazz pianists of the 20th and 21st centuries. His 2008 recording ABOUT TIME is a tidy, lovely summation of his talents. Though Bley has recorded in almost every setting imaginable, ABOUT TIME is, like many of his finest discs, a solo outing.

There are only two tracks, the 33-minute long title track (a Bley original), and a lengthy, inspired take on the Sonny Rollins tune "Pent-Up House." Both show Bley in all his variegated splendor as an improviser. Blues, bop, chamber music, avant tendencies, startling turns, and gorgeous, lyrical interludes are all woven into Bley's extended tapestries for a full dose of purely creative contemporary jazz.

Album Review

Legendary pianist Paul Bley possesses one of the most fertile and creative minds in jazz. Now seventy-five years old, yet showing no signs of slowing down, he presents another fascinating solo recording, this time containing just two selections (one is thirty-three minutes in length).
