If you think you've heard it all when it comes to boy bands, you haven't heard Son by Four. While these four photogenic young men do indeed harmonize with enough sweetness and romance to melt the hearts of teenage girls at twenty paces, there's something else afoot here. The quartet's debut album finds them mixing harmony-laden pop with salsa and other Latin music variants for a fresh new sound. It's nice to hear some real percussion and horns amid the synths and loops. In fact, there's often more organic instrumentation than electronic adornment, which gives these tracks an agreeably warm feel. And while the pop aesthetic is never far behind, the Latin element in these compositions is strong, not just a flavor tacked on for marketing purposes.
