5 out of 5 stars Dark Symbolism Lurks Neath the Surface, November 28, 2011

I initially received this book by mistake. I had ordered a copy of the motion picture "The Young Victoria" after hearing a friend recommend it, but I must have mistyped the title. Imagine my surprise when this arrived instead. Needless to say, my movie night was cancelled.  I was going to return it and get my money back, but I started to read and could not stop. Something, I am not sure what, compelled me to venture fowards. What I discovered was a deceptively simplistic existential-tragi-comedical  bildungsroman by one of the most unknown authors of our generation. Being enrolled in a post-graduate program for contemporary literature, I am not content to read merely for pleasure, skimming the surface as might a mere disc-shaped stone of a reader. I require pathos, bathos, allusion, symbolism, subtext, and polysyndeton (but not necessarily in that order). As I am now on my fourth reading of said novel, I can assure the casual reader that it contains all these... and more.  I am very much looking foward to future works by M. Hall, which I hope to read upon completion of my doctoral dissertation on this superfluous work of words, A Young Princess.
