Review

"The author's brave narrative uses her personal experiences to outline the oppressive misrule of the past three decades in Afghanistan....A chilling, vital memoir that reveals hidden truths about Afghanistan and directly addresses the misguided policies of the United States."

Publisher's note

A human rights award winner and member of the Afghan parliament recounts her work in underground girls' schools during the Taliban's reign and how she risked her life to denounce powerful warlords in Afghanistan, in a book by a woman who has survived four assassination attempts.

Annotation

At a 2003 convention to ratify the Afghani constitution, Malalai Joya began what seems to be an inexorable march towards martyrdom. Joya, then only 25 years old, made an astounding speech condemning the tyrannical warlords of her country, some of whom were sitting before her in stunned silence. Since then, she has survived four assassination attempts, and is forced to wear the burqa, symbol of male oppression in Afghanistan, for own disguise and protection as she travels the country speaking out against injustice. In this compelling and pertinent memoir, Joya details the genesis of her activist spirit and recalls her diligent efforts to educate women and fight misogyny. She also continues her campaign against the warlords, calling them out by name and criticizing the United States for allowing these drug-funded thugs free reign after the (temporary) toppling of the Taliban in 2001.

In the tradition of Ayaan Hirsi Ali's "Infidel," and also the subject of an award-winning documentary, this impassioned, first-person account tells of a courageous young Afghani woman who risks her life by denouncing the powerful warlords in her country.
