What's a New Jersey-based college rock band that hit its peak in the late 1980s to do in 2007, long after the luster of their moment in the spotlight has faded? Release a Christmas album, of course. It might seem an anomaly--with lead singer Pat DiNizio's dark baritone and the band's guitar-heavy attack--for the Smithereens to make music for the holidays, and it is, but SMITHEREENS CHRISTMAS is a surprisingly fun listen. The band keeps things light, with tunes like "Santa Bring My Baby Back (To Me)," "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree," and a cover of the Beatles' "Christmas Time is Here Again."
