Review

"Drawn from the journals Betts kept while in prison, the book captures the confused adolescent musings of a boy moving from the simple world of childhood to a complex adult reality, infused with shades of gray."

Publisher's note

A powerful debut memoir from a published poet and emerging writer.
At the age of sixteen, R. Dwayne Bettsaa good student from a lower-middle-class familyacarjacked a man with a friend. He had never held a gun before, but within a matter of minutes he had committed six felonies. In Virginia, carjacking is a acertifiablea offense, meaning that Dwayne would be treated as an adult under state law. A bright young kid, weighing only 126 poundsanot enough to fill out a medium T-shirtahe served his eight-year sentence as part of the adult population in some of the worst prisons in the state.
"A Question of Freedom" is a coming-of-age story, with the unique twist that it takes place in prison. Utterly aloneaand with the growing realization that he really is not going home any time soonaDwayne confronts profound questions about violence, freedom, crime, race, and the justice system. Above all, "A Question of Freedom" is about a quest for identityaone that guarantees Dwayneas survival in a hostile environment and that incorporates an understanding of how his own past led to the moment of his crime.

An ex-con author describes his realization that he really was not going home from prison any time soon; confronts profound questions about violence, freedom, crime, race, and justice; and relates his quest for identityùone that guaranteed his survival in jail and incorporated an understanding of how his own past led to the moment of his crime.

Annotation

Almost every teenager has broken the law at some point, but, thankfully, few of us have to pay as high a price as R. Dwayne Betts did for his experimentation with delinquency. At the age of 16, Betts, who was a promising student from a lower-middle-class family, committed a terrible crime when he and a friend carjacked someone on a whim. Betts was tried as an adult, convicted and sentenced to serve eight years in prison—with the adult population of inmates. While most people likely would have succumbed to the fear and despair of such a hostile situation, Betts became determined not to let his life be defined by a single poor choice. While incarcerated, he educated himself, began writing poetry and started a book club for his fellow prisoners, and since his release he has become a renowned public speaker and advocate for juvenile rights in the justice system. In his first book, Betts displays the voice of a poet as he relates his own compelling story, which details how he transformed a seemingly hopeless situation into an opportunity for benevolent change.
