Annotation

John Lescroart's thirteenth novel to feature San Francisco lawyer Dismas Hardy and homicide detective Abe Glitsky focuses on the murder of a coffee shop manager who was apparently also serving up something a little stronger than caffeine. Java merchant Dylan Volger is found dead with a backpack full of potent marijuana, and the preliminary investigation points the police in the direction of the absentee owner of the café, Hardy's client Maya Townshend. Despite the evidence accumulating against her, Townshend refuses to cooperate with Hardy, leaving him to try to decipher and interpret the various illicit connections between her and Volger which he gradually uncovers. Meanwhile, Glitsky is grief-stricken as his young son clings to life after a car accident. All of these threads eventually connect in an explosive courtroom climax reminiscent of recent real-life events.
