Bill Douglas Artist Snapshot:

Canadian Bill Douglas personifies the eclecticism that characterizes 21st-century New Age music. A critically acclaimed recording artist, he has released several best-selling Celtic-flavored titles. He composes classical musical pieces for orchestras and choral groups around the world, and has taught music history and technique on the university level. He has played jazz piano, and classical bassoon, and worked as a musical theorist. Often setting elegant 18th- and 19th-century poetry to original tunes, Douglas makes excellent use of the spine-tingling choral blends of the Ars Nova Singers. The hymn-like songs traverse a surprising variety of styles, from Celtic to classical to folk to an almost aboriginal tribal feel.

NAPRA Review (09-10/01, p.86) - "...Centers around themes of sunrise, peace, nature, dew, and love arising..."

Title Note

Personnel: Bill Douglas (bassoon, piano, synthesizer); Ars Nova Singers (vocals); Yumi Hwang (violin); Judith Glyde (cello); Anne Stackpole-Cuellar (flute); Bil Jackson (clarinet); Peter Cooper (oboe); Ty Burhoe (drums, tabla); Timothy Quigley (cymbals).

Recorded at Colorado Sound, Denver, Colorado.

Dawn is a heady, reflective time that inspires some of the best poetry. On A PLACE CALLED MORNING, composer Bill Douglas melds classic poetry, on the general theme of awakening and sunrise, with sweetly melodic choral and orchestral music. The effect is deeply warming. The title track comes from Emily Dickinson's meditation on Heaven. This album is another powerful collaboration between Bill Douglas and the fine singers of the Ars Nova Chorus.
