Review

Spin (4/99, p.166) - 8 (out of 10) - "...startlingly musical, orgainized into patterns as regular as breath....'A' is full of sounds that are nerve-fraying errors when they happen in pop...which Pan Sonic isolates, distills, and wittily arranges into actual songs..."
Q (5/99, p.111) - 3 Stars (out of 5) - "...low frequency sounds produced by antique analogue generators....a return to their purest selves: inhuman, slightly sinister but wonderfully bracing and strange..."
The Wire (1/00, p.67) - Included in Wire Magazine's "50 Records Of The Year ['99]"
The Wire (3/99, p.62) - "...Despite, or perhaps because of their nakedness as sound sculptures (without visible objects), each track suggests vivid images, scenes, moods..."

Title Note

Pan Sonic: Ilpo Vaisanen, Miko Vainio.

Mika Vainio and Ilpo Vaisanen reclaim the "A" stolen from their name by the Matsushita Corporation. While Finland's Pan Sonic never play dub's trickery as overtly as the Berlin crew (Pole, the Chain Reaction artists), the echo-deflected shape of "Maa" and "Voima" attest to the international influence of Jamaican remixology. The base material for A is more abstract than ever, a hodgepodge of reverberating tones, electronic squiggles, low end pulses, and varicolored static. These elements are combined with the duo's finely minced rhythms, creating some of the most remarkable and ingenious Pan Sonic constructions yet.

"Ahdin" and "A-Kemia" again allude to the ghosts of dub in their interweaving of skipping brushed-snare grooves and echo-laden footsteps. Alongside the usual Pan Sonic parcel of chattering rhythms, brittle, syncopated clicks, and contorted MHz frequencies, The lopsided rhythms of "Lomittain" and "Askel" evolve non-linearly from resectioned drum machine programming. Tribal beats speed towards the pulse-racing conclusion of "Telakoe." Streams of molten noise are contoured on "Havainto" and "SSrmays." A bodes well for the continuing vitality of these two brilliant musicians.
