Review

"Rorem proceeds with the studied elegance of a dandy, the bravado of a dyed-in-the-wool contrarian and the dialectical bent of a classicist. Despite Rorem's renowned flair for high-cultural gossip, and his delight in scandalizing, his true subject is nostalgia for a lost self and the transitory compensations of art and sex."

"Rorem's style is the same whether he's writing about Bartok or Turkish baths. He describes the work of art or the situation with a deft wit, sometimes tinged with disapproval....All the pieces chosen for this Reader are good, but in some cases the originals have been edited down so much that one misses the pace of Rorem's best ramblings, which...include asides that seem irrelevant and yet prove unforgettable. Those already familiar with his work might find this selection frustrating, but as an introduction it might open the door not just to his other books, but also to his music."

"A NED ROREM READER is welcome....Reading Rorem on music, you realize that he is, first of all, a composer."

Publisher's note

Ned Rorem, composer and writer, is both a gifted memoirist and one of our most acerbic cultural commentators. This anthology of his musings on music, people, and life surveys the full range of his literary achievement and reflects the evolution of his sensibilities.
The first part of the book is devoted to writing of an autobiographical nature, including ruminations on being alone and on becoming a composer. The second part focuses on music and individuals from Bart=k and Ravel to Edith Piaf and the Beatles. The final part consists of portraits and memorials of such figures as Martha Graham, Paul Bowles, Marc Blitzstein, Frank O'Hara, Allen Ginsberg, and Truman Capote. The Book also includes a lengthy conversation on the art of the diary.

Annotation

This collection of the writings of the Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and celebrated diarist includes diary excerpts, memoirs of old friends, and interviews.
