Review

Magnet (p.108) - "Underneath the big league arrangements are a set of muscular tunes that would still sound great played by a standard rock combo."
CMJ (p.46) - "[T]he band packages all the best things about '70s AM radio and early British pop and tinges it with their own flair for dramatics."

Title Note

The Sharp Things: Stuart Bogie (tenor); Jim Santo, Michelle Caputo (guitar); Andrea Dovalle, Janis Shen (violin); Aisha Cohen (viola); Claire Freeman (cello); Andrew Hoglund (flugelhorn); Perry Serpla (organ); Bob Byrne (keyboard); Rich Holst (bass guitar); Steve Gonzalez (drums); Pierre Losquadro (bells).

Additional personnel: Carla Maniscalco, Michael Cerveris (vocals); Franz Nicolay (accordion); New York Ensemble, Sybille Werner.

The Sharp Things take the name of their second album, A MOVEABLE FEAST, from Ernest Hemingway's classic memoir chronicling the misadventures of expatriate American writers in 1920s Paris. This is likely by design as the Sharp Things, an 11-member collective out of New York City, view themselves as on the outskirts of indie rock, playing inventive pop in combinations that recall everything from 1970s grandeur crossed with Stax/Volt emotion ("Cruel Thing") to Pulp riffing on Neil Diamond ("Driving in Manhattan in My Car"), all the while keeping the spirit of the Big Apple front and center.
