Title Note

Recorded at the Institute For The Unraveling Of Pancakes, San Francisco, California between 1996 and 1998.

San Francisco ambienteers Thermal (Joshua Maremont) and Seofon (Jeff Kihn) get down to some serious brass cosmic tacks on this anything-but-ambient slab of plastic. All four tracks take on the epic, all-encompassing quality evidenced by their titles. "Ouster Swarm" suggests the birth and death of distant galaxies, as loping sweeps of electronics and revolving rhythmic patterns pound out their galactic rituals. "Application of Buddhistic Classics" is Pakistani psychedelia that re-contextualizes the traditional alap, the beat structures achieving instant crescendo, erupting into a tribal tour de force of clicking cymbals, wheezy pseudo-sitars, and puffing synths. "A Toy Ascending the Tidal Current Mixture" is another head rush of aural starstreams, more frank than blank, more Orb than Orbital. "Another Tank Farm by Trolley" plunges us into murky watery depths, its slippery electronic blips set amid a tidal pool of processed guitars and skipping hi-hats. A MONUMENT OF CHANCE is testament to the continuing richness of the growing American electronic underground.
