Review

Alternative Press (8/02, p.76) - 7 out of 10 - "...Provides smooth, propulsive party tunes for the discerning skanker/mosher. Tour bus, here they come. They still belong there."

Title Note

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones includes: Dicky Barrett (vocals); Lawrence Katz (guitar); Tim Buron, Roman Fleysher (saxophone); Chris Rhodes (trombone); Joe Gittleman (bass); Joe Sirois (drums).

Additional personnel: James Flitting (harmonica); Rolf Langsjoen (trumpet); Mike Deneen (piano); Kan McLoughling (keyboards).

Recorded at Q Division, Boston, Massachusetts.

No Doubt may have garnered all the pop acclaim, but of all the third wave of ska-pop bands to come down the pipe, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones have unerringly flown the Two-Tone flag via relentless touring and a consistent string of quality albums. A JACKNIFE TO A SWAN finds the Beantown octet returning to the comfort of an indie label and unleashing their trademark mix of ska, reggae, and hardcore punk. Led by gravel-voiced singer Dickie Barrett, the Bosstones continue to exhibit the tight interplay that's always been their trademark, as on the double-timed, horn-fueled "Mr. Moran" (based on the escapades of Mob turncoat Sammy "The Bull" Gravano) and "The Old School Off The Bright," a Specials/Skatalites-flavored shoutout to all the band's diehard fans.

The gritty and streetwise mindset of these Boston natives comes across in much of the lyrical content whether it's the class inequity at the heart of the quick-stepping "You Can't Win" or the regret infused into the nostalgic anthem "I Want My City Back." Most impressive is "Everybody Better," a rock-steady walk in the park that rides guitarist Lawrence Katz's clipped rhythm riffs and the horn section's rich charts.
