Review

"Full of interest and acute and often surprising perceptions, enriched by Braudel's peculiar ability to yoke together things remote from each other in time or space."

"A work of art - far nobler than mere scholarship. Its insights are variously luminous, startling and curious...Braudel's portrait of the planet is immensely varied and vivacious...a panorama full of emotion, excitement, humanity and even hope"

Publisher's note

This groundbreaker by one of the premier historians of this century takes an anti-ethnocentric approach to the history of civilizations. This book focuses on the broad sweep of history rather than on the famous events. It covers historical developments in almost every corner of the globe, from the Muslim world and the Far East to Europe and the Americas. Includes maps.

In this illuminating account, originally intended for French schools and now translated for the first time, one of the century's greatest historians surveyed 'the main contemporary civilizations'. Separate sections examine the Muslim world, Black Africa, the Far East, Western Europe, (from the fall of the Roman Empire to political union), 'the other Europe' to the East, the European civilizations of the New World, and 'the English-speaking universe'. Even an educational text, Braudel once suggested, can be 'a tale of adventure' - provided it is written with a 'simplicity that is clarity, the light of intelligence'.

Annotation

French historian Fernand Braudel's groundbreaking study provides a panoramic sweep of major civilizations in the modern world since the eighth century. Braudel eschews the events-and-personalities-oriented method of history for a broader one that illuminates larger patterns. He begins by musing on the word "civilization" and follows with an essay exhorting historians to "use all of the social sciences" in their work. He also provides overviews of the Islamic world, Africa, the Far East, Europe, America, and "the other Europe" (primarily Russia before and after the revolution). Braudel's history, originally written for university courses but rejected by his superiors, is accessible to the average, intelligent reader. Maps illuminate the text.
