Review

"Rafael Yglesias has transformed the story of his life and that of his wife, Margaret Joskow, who died in 2004, into a profound deliberation on the nature of love, marriage and the process of dying....[I]n the death of this beautiful woman, he has found the novel of his life."

"The mystery of what's at the heart of a marriage can't be unlocked, or even fully captured in words. But Enrique and Margaret are anything but common, distinct both as characters and in the endurance of their love."

"The protagonist recounts the triumphs and failures of a well-matched relationship with raw, often brutal honesty. Any 21-year-old can rhapsodize over the curves of his beloved's cheekbones; it's the decades that follow...that reveal both the limits and the transcendence of a true, lasting love."

Publisher's note

"A Happy Marriage" is stunningly candid and revelatory book about what it means for two people to spend a lifetime together.

A tale inspired by the the author's marriage to his late wife alternates between the first weeks of a young couple's acquaintance and the bittersweet final weeks before the wife's death and follows their recollections of highs and lows that marked their middle years. By the screenwriter of Fearless.

Annotation

Rafael Yglesias (FEARLESS) broke into the literary world as a teenager with the publication of HIDE FOX, AND ALL AFTER (1972) his autobiographical novel of adolescence, and so it seems appropriate that Yglesias ends a long hiatus from the novel with another autobiographical novel, this one tracing the young courtship and happy 30-year marriage of Enrique Sabas (himself a literary wunderkind) and Margaret Cohen, a vivacious woman who eventually succumbs to liver cancer (much like Yglesias's own wife did in 2004). Though the narrative arc is simple and unadorned with the usual melodramatic flourishes of fiction, Yglesias's exquisite attention to the details of the heart and the world creates a work of great beauty and heartbreak, a meticulously crafted ode to the subtle mysteries of that dear commodity, long-lasting love.
