The simple and vibrant story of the shy daughter of an impoverished, once-genteel household, who gets the chance to escape when she falls in love with a young man from Athens. He is too immature to respond to her until a disaster shocks him into a new awareness of himself. Writer and director Cacoyannis' (STELLA, A MATTER OF DIGNITY) third film won the Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign-Language Foreign Film in 1957.
