If his claims on "Give Up On Guitars" to practicing "a lesser art" hold any water, then New York City singer-songwriter/guitarist Mike Bones sure fools everyone on his second excellent record in as many tries. With organic arrangements, an emotive voice, minor-key hooks, and contempt-soaked narratives (himself, love, artistic fraudulence, and the world at large are among his favorite targets), A FOOL FOR EVERYONE reveals Bones's undeniable brilliance as a songwriter--particularly across its most compelling sequence: the nervously arpeggiating "One Moment's Peace," the carnal title track, and the brutally direct "Like A Politician." But--bolstered by a line-up of New York indie rock all-stars such as Matt Sweeney and Brad Truax--every track is a keeper. Referential but not derivative, raw-nerved but not emo, bracing but not punk, A FOOL FOR EVERYONE reinvigorates classic confessional singer-songwriter tropes for modern times.
