Synopsis

Annotation

In June of 1940 Paris was overtaken by the Germans. A young boy named Bertrand, his mother, and his sister attempt, unsuccessfully, to flee the country. At the same time, a girl named Zina, her sister, and her parents are living in a Russian enclave in the South of France where they are also feeling the effects of the German invasion. Bertrand and Zina meet when they, along with many other children, fall under the care of an American woman who is attempting to help refugee children escape to the United States. Both Bertrand and Zina must deal with the horrible conditions World War II has inflicted on their country, their apprehensions about moving to the United States, and their fears that their parents have abandoned them forever.
