Review

"Acts of folly and bravery are depicted, and Neufeld makes a striking political point without tipping over into didacticism."

"Neufeld's low-key art brings a deeply humanizing element to the story." (starred review)

"A.D....[uses] unique one- and two-color panels to create moods of panic and distress while capturing acts of humanity during the catastrophe's worst moments."

"[A]t its finest, A.D. sketches the incomprehensible: the storm that covers the city like a palm covering a dime; the buzzing of mosquitoes, septic and insouciant, in the fetid night; the overwhelming memories that leave a survivor bug-eyed and drowning. It is the people's history of Katrina...[b]ut he remains objective--reporting rather than pointing fingers at either the thugs that were there or specific politicians and agencies that fell woefully short."

Publisher's note

This graphic novel depicts the events of Hurricane Katrina though six true stories of New Orleanians who survived the storm, including Denise who experienced the chaos of the Superdome, and a Doctor whose French Quarter home was unscathed.

A stunning graphic novel that makes plain the undeniable horrors and humanity triggered by Hurricane Katrina in the true stories of six New Orleanians who survived the storm.
"A.D." follows each of the six from the hours before Katrina struck to its horrific aftermath. Here is
Denise, a sixth-generation New Orleanian who will experience the chaos of the Superdome; the Doctor,
whose unscathed French Quarter home becomes a refuge for those not so lucky; Abbas and his friend
Mansell, who face the storm from the roof of Abbas's family-run market; Kwame, a pastor's son whose
young life will remain wildly unsettled well into the future; and Leo, a comic-book fan, and his girlfriend,
Michelle, who will lose everything but each other. We watch as they make the wrenching decision between staying and evacuating. And we see them coping not only with the outcome of their own decisions but also with those made by politicians, police, and others like themselves--decisions that drastically affect their lives, but over which they have no control.
Overwhelming demand has propelled "A.D. "from its widely-read early Internet installments to this complete hardcover edition. Scheduled for publication on the fourth anniversary of the hurricane, it shines an uncanny light on the devastating truths and human triumphs of New Orleans after the deluge.

Annotation

Originally published serially as an online web comic by Smith Magazine, A.D.: NEW ORLEANS AFTER THE DELUGE is a fearsome and tender tribute to the surviving spirit of those who lived through the 2005 Hurricane Katrina. Creator Josh Neufeld prefers a monochromatic palette, choosing one principle color per chapter, a simple devise that gives the narrative an eerie focus--much like how he opens with a sequence of panels without any dialog, chillingly evoking the silence before--and after--a storm of this magnitude. Neufeld tells New Orleans's story through seven very different characters, who each must decide how to handle the impending disaster and what to do in the face of the destruction the storm and levee breaches left behind.
