Matmos Artist Snapshot:

San Francisco-based electronica duo Matmos (aka M.C. Schmidt and Drew Daniel) make clever, cerebral, beat-driven sound collages using a variety of found sounds, ranging from surgical equipment and amplified human body parts to broken musical instruments and the dusty grooves of old folk recordings. The result is both challenging and highly intriguing. Matmos are also known for being the on-stage beatmakers for experimental pop singer Bjork. They released an album dedicated to and inspired by a number of their heroes--musical and otherwise--in 2006 entitled THE ROSE HAS TEETH IN THE MOUTH OF THE BEAST.

Review

Spin (5/01, p.145) - 8 out of 10 - "...Based on the sounds of medical technology....Matmos have captured with discomforting vividness the sheer surrealism of the modern vanity industry, the medieval tortures people gladly endure in pursuit of physical perfection."
Q (5/01, p.114) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...An album of eminently approachable, even funky, electro beats and grooves....it's good, albeit eccentric fun."
Alternative Press (2/02, p.65) - Ranked #14 in AP's "25 Best Albums of 2001".
Alternative Press (5/01, pp.76-7) - 4 out of 5 - "...Bizarre....music that's formed from formerly living things....begging the question of whether this is actually music or rather an experiment with materials..."
Magnet (6-7/01, p.101) - "...Some artists stimulate your brain, others tickle your senses. Matmos does both..."
The Wire (1/02, p.40) - Ranked #29 in Wire's "50 Records of the Year 2001".
Muzik (3/01, p.93) - 4 out of 5 - "...Experimentronica's answer to Sonny and Cher...[this album] features human skulls, plastic surgery sounds and rat cage bars. Splendid....this sounds like nothing you've heard before."
CMJ (4/16/01, p.12) - "...Playful experimental electronica pop..."
Mojo (Publisher) (4/01, p.115) - "...An eminently listenable collage of jittery grooves, lop-sided beats and wayward electronica..."
NME (Magazine) (2/10/01, p.34) - 8 out of 10 - "...Gloriously lucid experimentation....What could be flash gimmickry is given depth and dynamic....The kind of thing that gives the avant-garde a good name..."
