Review

"Wetherell traces the arc of a father's loss in this poignant, probing story....Wetherell's prose and character writing are unflinching....Though the novel travels a well-trodden route, Wetherell's take on a parent's anguish is deeply moving."

First line

He judged men and he grew apples and it was a perilous autumn for both.

Publisher's note

After learning his son has been killed in the First World War, apple grower Charles Marden sets off for Belgium to find the site of his son's death, only to take up the search for the pregnant girlfriend his son was forced to leave behind. 2004 Michigan Literary Fiction Award Winner.

Annotation

In a novel set in the early 20th century, Charles Marden, a widower, grows apples in Vancouver. His son, Billy, has been killed during the last days of World War I, and a griefstricken Marden decides to travel to Europe in search of the place where his son died. When he arrives, he goes through a kind of hell as, on the wasteland in Flanders that the battlefields have become, he encounters other seekers, meets the inevitable con men, and slogs through the region's famous mud. His quest, finally, expands to include his son's unexpected girlfriend, Elaine, a young Englishwoman looking for the same thing. Marden does find out the details of his son's death--and also, through Elaine, learns that life can go on. W. D. Wetherell's elegant novel is short, harrowing, and deeply moving. It vividly evokes both its war-torn setting and its 1918 time period.
