Though project mastermind Greg Street has his picture and name on the front cover of SIX O'CLOCK VOL. 1, this is actually a collection featuring a wide selection of hip-hop artists participating in a grand-scale "mix tape" conceived by Street. The overwhelming vibe of the disc is hardcore gangsta, as the usual thug-life topics and attitudes are explored by such heavy-hitting rappers as Ludacris, Eightball, Trick Daddy, and Scarface. A dark, ominous vibe reigns throughout, as crime, violence, and misogyny are disseminated with an emphasis on gritty street realism. Unrelenting beats and tight production keep the whole thing running smoothly, and Street's overview makes the whole thing cohere.
