Review

Dirty Linen (12/99-1/00, p.80) - "Mr. Roots Rock is back, and he's more formidable than ever....What he says is so easy to relate to, and so nicely delivered with catchy hooks, that he's created a memorable outing..."
New Music Monthly (7/99, p.47) - "...Eaglesmith could be dismissed as trite, but a careful listner will find gems...pleasnatly reminiscent of Townes Van Zandt."

Title Note

Personnel: Fred Eaglesmith (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Scott Merritt (electric guitar, dulcimer, tambourine, samples, background vocals); Kim Deschamps (pedal steel & baritone guitars); Willie P. Bennett (acoustic & electric mandolins, electric harmonica, background vocals); Dan Whitely (acoustic mandolin); Jeff Bird (fiddle, Theremin); John P. Allen (fiddle); Richard Bell (Hammond organ); Paul Intson (bass); Peter Von Althen (drums, percussion); Washboard Hank (percussion); Ralph Schipper, Jenny Whitely, Dottie Cormier (background vocals).

Engineers: Scott Merritt, Nik Tjelios, Andrew McPherson.

Recorded at The Cottage, Guelph, Ontario, Canada.

Though he hails from Canada, Fred Eaglesmith's heart lies with the outlaw country-rock that came from the southern U.S. (the likes of Waylon Jennings, Tompall Glaser et al), and he does a convincing job of passing himself off as an educated redneck. The studio gimmickry of the preceding LIPSTICK LIES & GASOLINE is toned down here in favor of a more organic sound that combines hard-hitting rock with raw country, blues and even a touch of rockabilly. Eaglesmith's artistic vision is one of eternal discontent, both with his fellow man and the circumstances that surround him, but as with the best rock & roll since the days of Elvis and Jerry Lee, the best way out is straight through. 50-ODD DOLLARS achieves the desired catharsis by virtue of Eaglesmith's songwriting skill and his four-on-the-floor singing style.
