Title Note

O.A.R.: Mark Roberge (vocals, guitar); Richard On (electric guitar, background vocals); Jerry Depizzo (saxophone); Benj Gershman (bass guitar); Chris Culos (drums).

Recording information: Hammerstein Ballroom, New York, New York (11/28/2003 - 11/29/2003).

Like fellow college-circuit rockers Sister Hazel and the Freddy Jones Band, O.A.R. (which stands for Of a Revolution) is one of a handful of groups that has been able to consistently sell out large venues and move hundreds of thousands of records with only limited commercial-radio airplay. The combo's bread and butter has always been touring, which is why 34TH & 8TH, O.A.R.'s second live album in three years, comes as no surprise. This one is a double-disc set, which gives the band room to extend several pieces to over 10 minutes ("That Was a Crazy Game of Poker," the act's signature song, tops out at a marathon 17:57). Throughout, O.A.R. delivers its trademark brand of reggae-fied acoustic folk-rock with a spring break party-like intensity, while lead singer Mark Roberge steadily whips the crowd into a sweaty frenzy with his soaring Bono-by-way-of-Bob Marley vocal stylings.
