The Promise Ring Artist Snapshot:

A band whose early albums practically defined emo, The Promise Ring created a rich body of work in their seven-year existence that gradually moved from melodic post-hardcore to delicate, sparkling indie pop. The sentimental, boyish vocals and lyrics gave voice to a whole new audience of sensitive boys (and the girls who love them), thumbing its nose at punk and hardcore's outsized machismo. By the time of their dissolution, following the release of their gently strummed, lush WOOD/WATER, they were the most popular band in the growing emo genre.

Review

Alternative Press (2/97, p.67) - 4 (out of 5) - "...The Promise Ring loosely draw inspiration from `pop punk' formulas...but repeat listens reveal a whittled-down technique in which only the untapped guitar line makes the cut, only the most striking melody gets deemed suitable....remind us that honesty and simplicity are powerful enough to move worlds--and hearts."

These young Wisconsin boys certainly know how to write sharp, powerful, and beautiful songs. 30ø Everywhere, the debut album from the Promise Ring, is still their best; it's basically straight-up pop/emo, very catchy, very intense, very powerful. Beautiful lyrics and melodies move from somber thoughts to moments that will make you smile in understanding. It's sort of like the soundtrack to a ride through your memories. Highly recommended. ~ Blake Butler
