Title Note

The year 1972 in soul music is represented well (if concisely) on this budget-priced collection assembled by the Rhino subsidiary Flashback Records. Eight different label imprints issued these recordings originally, among them Atlantic and Curtis Mayfield's Curtom. Mayfield leads things off with the indelible "Superfly," one of six gold records to be included. He is followed by Aretha Franklin, whose buoyant "Day Dreaming" hit number one on the Billboard soul chart in 1972, as did four other tracks here. (A sixth chart-topper, the Spinners' "Could It Be I'm Falling in Love," though released in late 1972, didn't top the chart until February 1973.) The collection provides a good cross-section of popular black music in 1972, from its grittier aspects (whether they be the streetwise "Superfly" or Joe Tex's funky "I Gotcha") to its more lush moments, such as the Stylistics' "Betcha By Golly, Wow." The album does not provide a full-length portrait of the era, but, as a snapshot, it captures an accurate glimpse. ~ William Ruhlmann
