Dave Thompson's wide ranging survey of 1970s glam rock begins, appropriately enough, with the artist who first popularized the genre--ex-hippie Marc Bolan, whose blend of rock, face paint, and glitter spawned a host of early-'70s imitators. Although glam rock was a largely British phenomenon, Thompson also includes American acts like Jobriath, Suzi Quatro, and KISS in his roster, as well as later arrivals like British rock & roll revivalists Showaddywaddy and teenybop bands Hello and Jet. Placing artists like David Bowie, Mott the Hoople, and Roxy Music in an appropriate musical and historical perspective, he also revisits the work of such less well-known groups as the Sensational Alex Harvey Band, whose version of Tom Jones's "Delilah" was a mid-'70s British hit, and Cockney Rebel, who, together with the American duo Sparks, provided some of the mid-'70s' most intriguing pop music. 20TH CENTURY ROCK & ROLL: GLAM ROCK is a comprehensive overview of and a valuable introduction to one of early-'70s' rock & roll's most entertaining musical genres.
