The late Tammy Wynette was one of the queens of country music. Along with her peers Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton, she virtually defined country singing from the female side of the equation. Her voice balanced strength and vulnerability, singing tales of heartbreak, divorce, romance and the struggle of the flesh vs.the spirit. Wynette could stand by her man ("I'll See Him Through"), yet she knew when to tell him enough was enough: witness the defiant honky-tonk whirl "Your Good Girl's Gonna Go Bad." There are few better examples of country soul than the gently pleading "'Til I Can Make It On My Own" or "Singing My Song." This budget-priced collection is a perfect introduction for those who haven't heard one of the finest American country singers, and a nice find for fans who have worn out her records.
