Title Note

Personnel: Black Uhuru; Robbie Shakespeare (bass); Sly Dunbar (drums); Taxi Gang.

Additional personnel: The Taxi Gang.

This import collection covers much of the group's output for Chris Blackwell's Island Records label. It focuses on the golden years of the band's career, when Michael Rose and Puma Jones (the latter of whom died an untimely death in the late '80s) were still members.

Produced by Sly & Robbie at the height of their powers, these tracks have an honesty and fury, and include some of Black Uhuru's grittier material, rather than a simple compilation of pop hits. The controversial (by today's standards) yet potent "Abortion" makes its way onto the disc among more noticeable hits like "Solidarity." It's possible that some of these tracks have either been re-mixed for this collection, or come from sources other than the Island masters, as there are a few very slight sonic differences between these and the originals, as in the wailing synth intro of "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner." Despite this little mystery, what we're left with is a potent collection for both the die-hard fan as well as the curious consumer.
