Review

Entertainment Weekly (p.130) - "[With] a charming variety of instruments....On the woozy folk ballad 'Serotonin,' MacFeely's aesthetic comes together gorgeously." -- Grade: B

Title Note

Simple Kid, the nom de stage of Cork, Ireland born Ciaran McFeeley, delivers this excellent sophomore album that shies away from the clean, digital funked-up weirdness of his debut, instead picking up where the pre-Scientology Beck left off: rootsy song-structures, dope beats, and an anything goes predilection. Like MELLOW GOLD-era Beck, McFeeley knows how to undercut party jams (represented here by the banjo-picking, electro hoedown "Lil' King Kong") with more pensive fare (the mournful ballad "Old Domestic Cat") and round it out with droney, more freeform musings (the stream-of-consciousness rambles "Serotonin" and "A Song of Stone") Simple Kid's talent is abundant, obvious, and anything but simple; and his confidence in his ability to tackle any genre has an intoxicating youthfulness. Here's hoping he never grows up.
