Those outside the inner circle of emo/punk fandom might be daunted by the seemingly endless supply of West Coast bands who've sprung up in that genre in the early '00s. However those who delight in punk energy married to pop hooks and earnest emotion will delight in Rufio's explosion into the mainstream after a couple of albums. 1985 (inconveniently expressed on the album cover in Roman numerals) presents a band that's tighter than the proverbial drum and full of vitality and passion. On such tracks as the propulsive, intricately riff-laden "Science Fiction" and the frenzied, full-on "Why Wait?" the proud men of Rufio broadcast their mix of punk and pop with the kind of emotional commitment that quickly makes hardcore fans out of innocent bystanders.
