Lloyd Cole Artist Snapshot:

Lloyd Cole caught a lot of people's attention with 1982's RATTLESNAKES, his debut record with backing band the Commotions. The dour-voiced Cole wrote dark, literate pop songs that managed to reference Arthur Lee, Norman Mailer, and Eva Marie-Saint without sacrificing his prodigious musicality. The debut was lauded by critics, but Cole never quite broke through to the masses. In the '90s, Cole left his native England and came to New York, where he recorded some of the best work of his career with backing by various luminaries of the downtown New York scene, including Robert Quine and Fred Maher.

Title Note

A handy precis of Lloyd Cole And The Commotions' three albums, 1984-1989 is an evenly divided compilation. It incorporates four tracks each from the near-perfect debut RATTLESNAKES, the somewhat flawed follow-up EASY PIECES, and the mature, downcast finale MAINSTREAM, with two excellent B-sides, "You Will Never Be No Good" and "Her Last Fling," for completists' sakes.

The song selection tends to the singles, with fine album tracks like "Are You Ready to Be Heartbroken?" in the minority. 1984-1989 is a nice sampler of the Scottish indie poppers' oeuvre; the only problem is that you won't be happy until you own all three of the original albums.
