Product note

Collecting sides from five years during Willie Mabon's tenure with Chicago label Chess Records and its immediate predecessor, Aristocrat, this best-of includes Mabon's smash hit, "I Don't Know" (with its inimitable tag line, "What did I do to make you mad this time, bay-bee"), as well as its follow-up, the laconic, half-spoken "I'm Mad." Mabon's influence on artists like Mose Allison is obvious in his hip, laid-back delivery, while the soulfully swinging piano- and horn-driven small group sound is early-1950s Chicago R&B at its finest.
