Review

Rolling Stone (11/27/97, pp.108-110) - 3.5 Stars (out of 5) - "...a voice that flows like a rap saxophone....the focus is on skills, not cars, drugs or gats....embellished with lush R&B and edgy Wu-Tang aural textures..."
Spin (1/98, p.114) - 7 (out of 10) - "...His vocal virtuosity--like a dark storm brewing over both tenemants and pyramids--has influenced everything from the trip-hop brilliance of Tricky to...[many] '90s lyricists....On his first solo album since breaking up with Eric B. in 1993, Rakim ages gracefully...and without bitterness..."
The Source (12/97, p.179) - 3.5 Mics (out of 5) - "...his style fathered a rhyme revolution still nurtured to this day....THE 18TH LETTER, Ra's first solo LP, comes complete chock-filled with new seven MC theories and wise prophesies..."
Melody Maker (11/22/97, p.45) - "...possibly the most eagerly awaited comeback in hip hop history...razor-sharp, blunted-raw pulse of lithe magic....it's fevered and abandoned where most would settle for lukewarm and cosy..."
Rap Pages (1/98, p.97) - Excellent - "...Rakim picks up right where he left off, hypnotizing us with his sublime rhyming skills....No one esle...has quite the same ability to take hold of the English language..."

Title Note

THE 18TH LETTER: THE BOOK OF LIFE is a two disc set containing a full album of new material and a greatest hits collection on the second disc.

Personnel: Rakim (rap vocals); Eric B. (rap vocals, programming); Pete Rock (piano, programming, scratches); DJ Clark Kent (programming, scratches); DJ Premier, Father Shah, Nick Wiz (programming).

Producers include: Rakim, Pete Rock, Eric B., DJ Clark Kent, DJ Premier.

Compilation producer: Kathy Baylor.

Engineers include: Patrick Adams, Ralph Sutton, Carlton Batts.

All tracks have been digitally remastered.

Lyrically, Rakim is the one rapper who defies comparison. His recordings with Eric B. have had a lasting impact on hip-hop culture, and he is arguably the best MC ever to wield a microphone. After a four-year hiatus, Rakim is back with his first solo album, THE 18TH LETTER: BOOK OF LIFE. A double-CD that features one disc of greatest hits and one of new material, this release puts Rakim back in the game once again.

The greatest hits disc provides a Hip-Hop 101 course, establishing the essential components of the genre that Rakim has mastered. On the new cuts, he continues to school listeners. He's paired here with some of hip-hop's hottest producers, including DJ Premier, DJ Clark Kent & Pete Rock. And while Rakim has stepped up the production, his lyrical content hasn't changed much, and is still far more complex than that of most other rappers.
