Enjoying its first reissue since its 1953 debut, this retrospective of Nat "King" Cole's first decade as a singer and bandleader is divided between his early years as a jazz musician with his Trio, and his later commercial success as one of the quintessential American postwar romantic crooners. The Trio's ineffable swing and Cole's own talents as a pianist and singer on cuts such as "Dream a Little Dream of Me" and "I'm an Errand Boy for Rhythm" are balanced by the lush romanticism of string arrangements by such master studio craftsmen as Pete Rugolo and Nelson Riddle on the exquisitely realized "Lovelight" and the after-hours "I Wish I Were Somebody Else."
