Before he authored albums with politically charged thematic ambitions, and gained notoriety for an unconventional approach to music production, Matthew Herbert was producing records in a variety of styles under an assortment of pseudonyms. 100 LBS collects the first three EPs released under his eponymous project name, Herbert. Rooted more in house music than his experimental electro Doctor Rockit, Radio Boy, and Wishmountain guises, this is dance music stripped down to the bare essentials of rhythm, funk, and atmosphere. Injecting a lively new spin on the typically cold and sterile sound of club music, the album is bathed in warm, intoxicating rhythms and quirky arrangements. Essential for fans and neophytes alike, 100 LBS is a fine introduction to the early work of one of electronic music's most inventive artists.
