Primarily known as the ultimate insider's singer-songwriter (more people have heard his songs in other artists' hands than his own), Tim Hardin never experienced the commercial success he deserved despite perfect albums like this one. He had already ventured into the studio in the early '60s (later released as THIS IS TIM HARDIN and 4), but this debut marks a real artistic development from those earlier trad blues sessions. 1 remains a beguiling high-water mark of the late Folk Revival as Hardin adorns a mellow folk-pop milieu with deeply soulful blues ("Green Rocky Road"), breezy minor-chord jazz ("Misty Roses"), and affecting easy-listening string arrangements. With feather-light vocal phrasing that nonetheless reveals a substantial emotive breadth, Hardin digs deep into the rewards and risks of losing oneself in someone else: elation, comfort, betrayal, and heartache. While every track is a winner, "Reason to Believe" and "How Can We Hang On To A Dream" belong on any serious list of the era's best songs.
